Keeping single-use plastics out of the ocean is a priority for MDF. The College of the Atlantic (COA) has made that a priority, too. Please join us in congratulating COA on becoming the first school in the country to fully eliminate disposable plastic food ware in all retail dining operations!

PLAN is a nationwide organization dedicated to developing student leaders through experiential opportunities, and the group had been working with COA toward this goal since 2019.  MDF’s grant to PLAN supported the final stage of a three-part fellowship program: stage 1 resources Fellows to perform a holistic assessment of the campus’s capacity to achieve zero waste, analyzing materials management systems from purchase to disposal. In the second stage, Fellows engage stakeholders across campus in the process of developing a campus-wide vision for what is needed to achieve zero waste. This includes infrastructure, staffing, policy, logistics, etc. MDF’s grant helped fund the third stage, in which Fellows develop a Zero Waste Action Plan, including a series of ROI analyses and cost-benefit proposals to map out the physical infrastructure and staffing needs to achieve zero waste. Read more about this Fellowship program and COA’s successes here. Congratulations, COA!
